Fun Science Experiment for Kids

Do you ever have trouble finding activities to entertain your toddler?

I know I do! I am always searching Pinterest, other blogs, and books for neat ideas. I try to find options that will teach her while she plays.

This is a simple, fun science experiment that kids can do, and is also kind of artsy at the same time.

Showing me where to add more colour.
We poured the milk into our bowl, added in the food colouring, and let Emily drop in the liquid dish soap (using a few cotton swabs, whatever you have handy will do!). We sat back and watched as the colours twisted together. It was quite mesmerizing, even for me. :)

Adding in more soap.
She enjoyed using the cotton swabs to drip in new drops of dish soap, after I added in more food colouring.

Since she's 2, it probably didn't do much good to explain what was happening. For older kids, this would be a great way to teach them about surface tension. The fat in the milk is being broken down by the soap, which is what makes colours blend together in front of your eyes.

Artsy Extra

The milk turned into one solid blue-green liquid. So, I separated it into a couple of containers, added a bit more food colouring to one of them, mixed in flour (cornstarch probably would have been better, but flour seemed to work too). When it was a good paint-like consistency, Emily dug in with some blank paper and her paintbrushes.

  7. This is a great science experiment. Most of us have these simple "materials" or ingredients on hand. Safe for all ages to be close and even stir up some colors. CooL!

  9. This looks like so much fun, and even I didn't know the science behind it. My kids are a bit older so we can learn and have the fun, I'm also constantly searching Pinterest and I've had a couple of 'fails' lol. Thanks for this one (I pinned it so I wouldn't forget) Your daughter is adorable by the way! :) ~Raine~

  10. That looks like so much fun and I think even as a single adult I'd enjoy seeing the reaction. I am curious if other types of milk (skim vs 2% or even a non-dairy milk) would have similar reactions or not. I may have to experiment sometime. Thanks :)

  11. This is such a fun experiment for kids! I love that you explained the science behind why the milk makes these crazy, beautiful designs. It's a great way to sneak some science into your children's fun time without them knowing :) I also love the colorful swirls in the milk.

  20. My kids are older now (9 and 11), but I have nieces and a nephew that are toddlers. I love Pinterest for ideas. My kids and I did this activity a few times when they were little, but I'm sure they would enjoy doing it with their cousins. I like the idea of turning it into paint after, I always dumped it out!

  23. My son loves to do his own little experiments. He uses my soap and different things to make special smells that he says help people. I think it is so cute when kids put items together and learn by their hands right at home.

  29. Having crafts at hand for the kids to do can be minds saving. You are trying to get dinner ready and the children are requiring attention, just bring out the crafts. The above mentioned craft will occupy their time and let you get things done.
