Di Decor Handcrafted Jewelry Review and Giveaway

Di Decor is an Etsy shop packed full of handmade works of art. From crocheted necklaces, to the beaded cuff bracelets that really caught my eye, Anna's selection kept my attention for quite awhile.

I admired her beaded cuff bracelets the most. The geometric quality to almost all of her patterns is something that I often look for in choosing my accessories. I appreciated her use of neutrals, colour blocking, as well as the inclusion of some bright pops of colour in between. I almost couldn't take my eyes off of this blue chevron pattern, or this slightly more whimsical silver and yellow cuff.

I was sent a beautiful chevron cuff bracelet for review. All the way from Poland, it arrived quickly, packaged elegantly in a little black gift box and nestled in a bed of coloured decorative stuffing. It was presented so nicely I (almost) felt bad taking it out.

I can really see and feel the patience and love that went into making this bracelet. Made using black, silver, and amber glass beads, the iridescence of the amber bead really adds that special touch. I love that when you see it from different angles, it took on a new appearance and played with your eyes. I can see this pairing well with pretty much any outfit because of the neutral colours, which is one of the reasons I chose it.

I tend to prefer a more tight fitting bracelet, but with warmer weather on its' way in, I happen to like that this one is a little bit looser. The closures are two easy, squeeze and pull type clasps, which made it really easy to get it on and off on my own. I liked that they were silver plated and complimented the overall look of the cuff, too.

All around, beading is one of those crafts I full-heartedly respect. Artisans spend hours coming up with distinct patterns, choosing just the right colour scheme and then figuring out how to put it all together. I am happy to have one of Anna's pieces as a part of my jewelry collection.

Additionally, for any of you craftier-than-I folk, if there's a pattern that especially calls out to you, download it to make on your own for less that $3.50! I'm even considering learning how to bead, just so I can make a few for friends and family. They would make great gifts!

Frosted Willow: Review and Giveaway

I was sent four stacking bangle bracelets to review, and I was so excited! There were so many to choose from, and it took me a long time to scroll through the amazing variety that is offered. I had a lot of trouble choosing because there was something that spoke to every side of my personality. There was something for the elegant side, the bold side, the boho side. You name it. Before I finally decided on the four pictured on the left, I was also thinking about either of these two.

I have always loved dragonflies. They seem so free, so I felt like that choice was appropriate for my personality. The orchid and the vintage turquoise stone bracelets looked so good next to each other that I knew those would make the cut. The last one, the more antique-looking bracelet of the bunch, really stood out to me. I can't quite put my finger on why. I think it might be the intricacy of the design, since normally I prefer something a tad more minimalistic.

These are closed bangle bracelets so I found it very helpful that the wonderful lady behind Frosted Willow, Katrin, has a sizing guide available. You just measure a bangle bracelet you already have, or the circumference of the widest part of your hand. Though, I found that I measured a little too true to fit and my bracelets were a little hard for me to get on. When you are taking your own measurements I would suggest not pulling the measuring tape too tight.

I had a lot of fun mix and matching different combinations to get the look I wanted. Each bangle looked beautiful on its' own, but when I put certain pairs together it only enhanced each design.

The orchid and the dragonfly were very fitting, and I liked that even when they are put together it still looks simple. I don't often go for things like a flower charm, but it was nice to tap into that side of me for a change. I feel like these would be great for a casual look or to be dressed up. I'm especially excited to wear these out with a feminine, flowing spring dress (again something I don't do often).

My favourite bracelet was the one that spoke to me the loudest. The antique-y one. It reminded me of one of those old spoons that my mom and dad used to collect when I was younger. I would admire them from my side of the frame,         looking but never touching. Now it's kind of like I get to wear one reincarnated around my wrist. I love that this design is something far different from what I would normally be drawn to.

I appreciate that while browsing, I could spot something for almost everyone I know and their individual tastes. With each bracelet costing only about $15 on their own, or around $40 for a set depending on the set, I would say that the prices are very affordable. I have no problem  paying for little works of art such as these, especially when I know each is originally designed, and carefully handcrafted. There are even sections dedicated to earrings, necklaces and bridesmaid/bridal gear. To top it off, when you order multiple pieces, you only pay shipping on the first item you order. I love this shop, and will definitely be keeping Frosted Willow in mind for special occasions.

The First Step is the Hardest

A couple of weeks ago I talked about something that was pretty big for me. And today I actually did it!

I got back from my testing with Essential Skills Manitoba a few hours ago. I wanted to post right away, but kind of needed to let my mind process what had happened. I feel like I've taken the first step to getting back into school...finally!

I have been putting this off for...well since 2005, when I graduated high school. I had no idea what I really wanted to do. Actually that's a lie, I had too many ideas! I wanted to be a lawyer, designer, doctor, teacher, writer, chef, artist, flight attendant. I wanted to run my own daycare, art gallery, clothing store, restaurant. You name it, I think at one point in my life I wanted to do it or be it.

This was my second attempt to go to the appointment. The first time was mid-February. My anxiety got the best of me, and I wound up so sick I had to call Emily's grandma and aunties to come and pick her up. Luckily, they were able to help out. It took me a good rest to stop throwing up, then the remainder of that night/earlier part of the next morning to work up the nerve to reschedule. Fast forward to yesterday.

Last night was full of anticipation, and some tossing and turning. But at no time did I feel sick, so that was an improvement from my first attempt. I made sure to have things a bit more organized, and Emily's bag packed. Outfits were set out for easy access because lets face it, I am not a morning person in the least. Since I don't have an alarm clock or a phone handy, I asked my mom to wake me up around 7:45. I figured that would give me enough time to get up and get the rest of Emily's stuff and myself ready. Then I woke up Emily, who opened just one eye and gave me the dirtiest look I've ever seen her give to anyone. I don't think she's much of a morning person either. As soon as I told her where she was going though, she perked right up.

"Kokum and Aunties," I told her.

"Kokum! Aunties!" She yelled back at me, while scrambling for her pants and socks.

My anxiety didn't hit me until we were downstairs waiting for her grandpa to come pick us up. It dawned on me that this will actually help open up opportunities. And it scared the heck out of me.

All of those questioning thoughts dissipated quickly once he arrived and I was getting into the truck. I actually started feeling excited instead of anxious, remembering that at one point I loved taking tests. At least I liked them while I was getting good grades.

The test itself seemed quite simple at most parts. I'm guessing it's designed specifically that way just to measure basic skills. I found myself distracted only a couple of times. Oh, and when the laptop I was on decided to restart itself in the middle of switching my spreadsheet to a chart. I think I uttered a quiet "what the f...". Only not so...censored.

What can I say? I can barely hold it in around Emily, so it slips out when I'm not around her more often than not. I don't think anyone was bothered by it though. The lady behind me was full of some pretty interesting choice phrases of her own.

I walked out of there feeling hopeful, as opposed to defeated like I normally feel after leaving these types of situations. Or any situation where I'm out in public, for that matter. I go back on the 24th, when I'll be 'debriefed' as they put it. Sounds super official, but to me it sounds like their nice way of saying ''you will be judged, and we'll get back to you on the 24th". I know that may sound silly to some but those are the kind of irrational, yet uncontrollable thoughts that I am currently trying to keep from bouncing around in my brain. So I'm trying more to focus on the moment I'm in, rather than the before and after's of everything.

On the bright side, while I was leaving something caught my eye. There was this painting that was so vivid, and wonderfully bright (considering I'm more of a black and white kind of gal). I wish I could describe it to you better! The little plaque beneath it read 'local artist Sharon Cory'. I had to take it in for a few minutes and when I got home I looked at some more of her gorgeous artwork. It's the little things like finding a new artist (especially a new local artist) that make my day.
